Hi guys! I couldn't post before because I'm sharing one PC with 4 guys (3 brothers and 1 dad). So before any of them appear by my door asking for this machine, let me tell you that the great documentary Captured on Film: The true story of Marion Davies (2001) is currently available to watch online. It's an attempt of doing justice as one of the interviewees says and showing the real talent Marion had. Narrated by Charlize Theron, it contains home movies and behind the cameras clips, interviews with people like King Vidor's daughter, Film Historians (one of them is called Charles Champlin) and Constance Moore. Also, there are bits of Marion's audio comments about her life with William Randolph Hearst recorded in the 50s. I really learned more about her life and I want to see some of the movies that they mentioned here. Enjoy:
More about funny Marion:
I loved her autobiography and I've worn it out with reading it over and over and looking at her great photos. I had the opportunity to visit Hearst Castle a few years ago and it was everything I imagined about the opulence of early Hollywood and Marian's life with Hearst plus some. As I toured the grounds I kept imagining her life there and her late night sneaks into the elevator where her guests hid her drinks out of the bosses sight.
ReplyDeleteHi Clara...I thought I'd seen this doc on TCM, but now I'm not sure. In any case, it's available on Amazon with a 5-star rating. BTW, Charles Champlin was a long-time columnist at the Los Angeles Times, but was with Time magazine before that. At some point he got into TV and all of his TV work (that I've seen) was on film. Knows his stuff. Thanks for this post on the delightful Marion Davies - too much in the shadow of W.R. Hearst!
ReplyDeletePage: Wait, the autobiography you mentioned is "The times we had"? Because I just ordered it and now I can't wait to read it :) Oh, you're so lucky! I wish I could visit the Hearst Castle, it must be amazing and so full of history and stories :) Thanks for sharing your experiences ^^
ReplyDeleteThe Lady Eve: Yes, I think TCM showed this documentary some time ago. Thanks for the info about Charles Champlin, it was so funny to see that name on the screen, I thought that maybe they were mistaken :) Yeah, the Amazon reviews are great, unlike the Imdb ratings. And yes, is a pity she was in the shadow of Hearst, she was such a great comedienne: neat how in the doc they say she was the first screwball actress . Thanks for stopping by ^^
Yes its "The Time We Had" and you're really going to enjoy it. She gives a lot of interesting info about the big name stars who frequented Hearst Castle and she even talks about their other home in northern California where John Kennedy stayed. I took a lot of photos while at San Simeon so I'll dig around and see if I can find them to show you. : )
ReplyDeleteHeres a great site that has a lot of photos if you click the different tours. http://www.hearstcastle.org/content/tour-2
Oh I found a new panoramic virtual tour that's just breathtaking. That gold lined Roman pool was something I'll never forget.
