Yes, I know. This is like Classic Hollywood E! Entertainment and it's is all over (my) Tumblr. Questions:
a) Is this letter real? The sheet and the signature seem legit, but why it's written like in Times New Roman?
b) If it's real, why did she hate so much Vivien Leigh? What happened between Robert Taylor and Miss Leigh?
c) If the reason has something to do with that, why is she so considerate in the paragraph about Lana Turner?
On a side note, people have noticed the kick ass way this letter is written: the sentence “They must have like that whore, Vivien Leigh instead. I don’t really give a damn anymore” is immediately followed by “Best of luck and wishes to you and your family”. LOL.
Can anyone shed some light into this?
WOW, just doesn't seem real at all, lol.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, your last sentence should be "Can anyone bring some light into this?" :)
Thanks for your help with my (primitive) English grammar :) I really want to improve it ^^
ReplyDeleteAnd about the letter, it's so weird. But, why would someone invent it? What would be the point?
Actually, I thought of a better way to say it: "Can anyone shed some light on this?" It would be much better if you want to use that :)
ReplyDeleteYes, but at the same time, people do weird things like this all the time... there have been stranger things out there. But who knows? Maybe Barbara really wrote that... which is shocking, lol.
Changed it, now I can see what's the proper translation of that idiom, thanks :) And yeah, the letter is shocking!
ReplyDeleteAny time! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm really curious if that is real, but how can we ever know for sure?
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!!
I don't believe it is her saying that. Besides she was pretty smart and would not put something on paper she could be sued for. Remember this is a NYC woman who made it the hard way. Stanwick was no way a dummy..
ReplyDeleteWell, I close and say Happy Thanksgiving to all.

There are quite a few grammatical errors in the letter, mostly homonyms. Some how, I very much doubt that Miss Stanwyck would have made such blatent mistakes, though it can happen to anyone.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe Stanwyck's relationship with Robert Wagner was known during her lifetime. Moreover, I doubt she would have publicly referred to Vivien Leigh as a "whore" -- and I've never heard of any rancor between them. In short, I don't believe this is genuine; Barbara had too much self-composure, and was too much the professional, to say some of these things.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's real, entertaining nonetheless. The text of the letter had to be done on a computer.
ReplyDeleteIf real, this letter would have been done on a typewriter. Letters on typewriters were fixed-width. A period used the same amount of space as capital W. So there is lots of awkward spaces between letters.
Computers kern the letters nice and close, variable width, like the text shown.
If someone is going to fake a letter, at least use a fixed width typeface like Courier.
Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts! I think that the general opinion is that this is fake. Now I'd like to know who wrote this and why...

ReplyDeleteI also believe that this letter is fake. It appears that someone wrote this letter on Barbara
ReplyDeleteStanwyck's letterhead that was done over another letter she wrote. It has a computer type
font as opposed to typewritten. Of course, computers were not yet prominent during Barbara's
lifetime.
Also, conveniently, there is no date in this letter. Finally, if Barbara disclosed a relationship
with Robert Wagner, why was it such a secret and surprise when Robert Wagner disclosed
it in his book?
I would tend to agree with Frankep0251. Stanwyck was known to be very plain spoken, but I don't think she'd be this open in a letter to a fan. She didn't divorce Robert Taylor until 20 years after his dalliance with Lana Turner, so that part is totally wrong.
